Common Road Traffic Accident Causes and How to Avoid Them

The new year has come, but there is one thing that can affect drivers at this time of year; the cold months of winter. The cold weather can cause visual impairments whilst driving, ice can form on the road which can constantly affect drivers, and the cold weather can cause certain parts of the vehicle to malfunction.

We always want to make sure that our clients are as safe as possible, which is why we have listed the most common road traffic accident causes so that you know how to avoid them and keep yourself safe.

Cause: Drink Driving

Unfortunately, drink driving is one of the most common causes of road traffic accidents in the UK. Over the festive period, the number of road traffic accidents due to drink driving increases, but one good statistic is that the number of drink driving incidents has reduced drastically over the past few decades. However, it still caused 8,530 casualties in 2015.

Solution: Don’t Risk It

The safest and most responsible thing you can do, as a driver, is to not even risk it – no matter what the occasion. There is more to lose if you drive a car under the influence of alcohol than if you weren’t to drive.

Cause: Losing Control of Your Vehicle

This is a big cause of accidents in the colder months, as drivers can lose control of their vehicles if there is rain, ice, or snow on the road.

Another cause of losing control is when people don’t slow down to a safe speed when taking a bend, or changing lanes.

Solution: Assess the Situation Prior to Going into it

In order to prevent losing control, the most effective way of doing it is to not allow yourself to get into the situation in the first place. Make sure that, before you reach the obstacle, assess everything regarding speed and how to turn around the bend.

You can also make sure that the components of your vehicle are in top condition, such as the vehicle itself, the tyres, and the brakes. With this, you will have a greater chance of keeping control of your vehicle.

Cause: Not Looking Properly

In 2015, failing to look properly caused more than 30,000 road accidents, meaning that it is the most common cause of all UK road accidents, and it should, realistically, be one of the easiest to prevent.

There are multiple reasons as to why this is the most common cause of road accidents, such as tiredness at the wheel, driver complacency, laziness, and distractions, such as loud music, using the phone, or paying attention to the satnav rather than the road.

Solution: Always be Alert and Pay Attention to the Road

Driving isn’t something that you can do without paying attention; it requires the utmost concentration. If you are not concentrating, then you will be putting yourself, your passengers, and other drivers at risk.

Make sure that, whilst at the wheel, you are on alert and always vigilant. If you are feeling tired, make sure to take a break for a few minutes to regain your composure.

If you stick to these rules whilst driving, then you will be safer than you ever were before. However, there are always, unfortunately, several reckless drivers on the road, so make sure that you are careful and are surveying the road as you make your way to your destination.
